The life and times of a Chicagoan studying in Scotland

Cheap things every casual traveler should own

These are some things that I’ve found to be very useful to pack every time I travel. None of them are very expensive but they’ve been LIFE-SAVERS! (Not literally, but you get my point!)

One of the things my mom wants to do when she visits Scotland is to see castles. I basically told her that from what I know, you sort of can’t take a step in Scotland without hitting a castle (though Wales has more castles-per-capita than any place in the world).
So right now, with the help of this lovely site, I’m trying to figure out which castles she’ll like the most. Because from what I’ve read, there’s sort of … different types of castles; not just motte and bailey and all that, but there are some castles that are -ACTUAL- castles, built as defensive structures, and then there are the ones built as luxury homes. So I’m trying to find a good mix of the two.
I’m hoping we can do Eilean Dolan and Castle Stalker at least, because those are my two favorites that I know of. And then of course Stirling Castle, and then there are a few in Edinburgh too.

Current castle masterlist of ones I want to take my mom to!
Crichton Castle (Edinburgh)
Edinburgh Castle (Edinburgh)
Stirling Castle (Stirling)
Holyrood Palace (Edinburgh)
Amhuinnsuidhe Castle (Isle of Harris, Outer Hebrides)
Eilean Donan (Kintail)
Castle Stalker (Argyll)
Alloa Tower (Alloa)

Hi everyone! I got the most exciting news today!

I received the Gilman Scholarship for $3,500!

This means that this blog will serve as both a travel diary and evidence of my Follow-on Service Project, where I share information about scholarships and travel for the LGBT* community.

I’m so happy and grateful that I’ve been selected for this great honor, and eager to get started on my experience in Scotland!

Scholarship hint: Keep all your scholarship essays saved to your computer. Many scholarships ask similar questions; if you see a piece of one essay that can fit for another, feel free to weave it in. This saves you work and ensures that your unique voice is encapsulated in every essay.

Two days ago I was accepted to the GlobaLinks Learning Abroad program! Now the most important thing is to get scholarships. I have applied, or am about to apply, for these so far:

  • Gilman Scholarship
  • Nina T. Shephard Scholarship
  • SAUIC scholarships
  • LAS scholarships
  • Negative Population Growth Scholarship
  • Butex “Five Things I Wouldn’t Study Abroad Without” Scholarship (I wrote a poem!)

I also entered several raffle-type scholarships, but I doubt those will come through. I will keep you updated on the scholarships I continue to search and apply for!
